Summary of What was California like Before Fire Suppression? Part One
- Many people think of fire in California as something that needs to be extinguished forever, but nearly all ecological species in California are fire adapted, meaning they thrive with application of fire.
- Of the 300,000 Indigenous Californians living in California before European arrival, a large percentage of them used fire as an agricultural practice.-Many Southern California tribes encouraged a diverse landscape through interval burning, which means burning certain landscapes at certain times. Burning was (and is) sacred, and a familial and community act.
- There were less trees in California before colonization, and this was good for the environment and prevented massive wildfires.
