- The growth of computers with sound cards and CD-ROMs in the early ’90s came about thanks to an industry standardization effort called the Multimedia PC.
- It was a big reason why computers of the era were sold as a full package, complete with monitor and speakers.
- If you’re reading this on a Windows laptop, you’re currently benefiting from a similar standardization initiative—the Ultrabook, a term invented by Intel in 2011.
