Intro
What’s inside?
Who is it for?

Ethical web design inspires trust and can be the difference between someone feeling safe and included when they visit your site and leaving feeling frustrated and overwhelmed. Among other things, it involves informed consent, safety, privacy, accessibility and inclusion. It should be the norm but until designers pledge an oath of ethics, it's important to follow checklists that can help ensure that what we design is in fact, ethical.

Tamara Sredojevic is a UX designer & brand strategist for people on a mission. She works with non-profits and indie makers to design ethical websites with a mindful approach. Sometimes, even the most compassionate people are guilty of unethical design by lack of knowledge, resources or awareness. But UX is for everyone. Here’s how the charity sector can work towards more ethical web design.

Mike Monteiro’s book «Ruined by design» has changed the way I see my job. It's given me the arguments I needed to discuss ethical design in public. This article covers only a section of the book but I really love it.

I like this article because it’s a very simple, easy to understand checklist of the most common dark patterns you should avoid.

Ethical design goes in pair with accessibility. Hannah Milan created this awesome pack of resources to learn, check and improve accessibility online.

I love this episode of «Explained» on Coding, it’s what I refer my non-tech friends to, to make them understand why diversity in tech is not just a question of morality and why they too should advocate for it.

In any job, it’s easy to forget about the person using your design, reading your copy or simply answering your questions during an interview. I love that Michelle Nguyen brings back emotional intelligence into UX research.

Teaching her autistic sons, designer Emma Wilkinson learnt how to tune in into people's thoughts and feelings which ultimately made her a better designer. If that isn’t pure UX, I don’t know what is.

Another Netflix documentary worth watching the understand the impact of unethical design and how the culprits are trying to find redemption today.

I hope this list will have triggered some interesting thoughts and conversations about the way you approach web design. Whether or not you work in tech, ethics is everybody’s business.

If you want to know more, I strongly advise you to read Mike Monteiro’s «Ruined by Design» in full. It’s a must.
