Freelancers who receive the majority of their income from a specific company would fall under this category, and the company must provide benefits and follow certain regulations. Companies that hire employees as freelancers would contribute to these benefits based on the prorated amount of work done for the company.

As a permanent employee, you're entitled by law to a number of employee rights, such as minimum wage protections, overtime pay, and unemployment insurance. However, some contract companies label their workers as independent contractors. Because these workers aren't technically employees, these businesses don't have to provide contractors with employee rights. While this ends up saving these businesses money, it can make things more difficult for their workers.

Another problem inherent in the gig economy model is worker representation and organisation. In the UK, if you are categorised as a ‘worker’ or ‘employee’ you have the right to join a union at work and have them initiate collective bargaining on your behalf for better pay and conditions. But not if you are ‘self-employed’.
