What’s inside?
Who is it for?

UX design is a craft that isn't always well implemented. Some products don't respect their users' mental health, or their users' privacy. They aren't robust enough to prevent stalking. They require a heavy cognitive load, or they're visually cluttered. They fight for users' attention instead of nurturing it. Mindful UX recenters UX so that it serves users and respects their mental state.

Clo S. is an independent UX designer, UX researcher and conversational designer. She founded This Too Shall Grow, a one-person UX studio with which she focuses on mindful UX: consulting for and crafting experiences that respect users' mental health and privacy. She is a trained mental health first aider. Through her articles, she also aims at empowering readers, improving their tech awareness and agency.

Allow me to start with an article I wrote myself. I think it serves as a great intro since it shows several principles of Mindful UX, and how they can also be beneficial outside of the UX realm.

This article tackles Calm Technology, which principles were first developed at Xerox PARC in the 90's. It's very close to Mindful UX, however the detrimental effects of today's digital world weren't as prevalent back then.

Clo Spaleniec

The author explores Calm Technology and how it compares to our digital life in 2020.

Dark patterns are ways to make us do something we wouldn't have done otherwise. They're all about manipulation & deception. This article is full of excellent examples of dark patterns: what not to do in UX.

Clo Spaleniec

This is a concise and thorough read on creating accessible websites.

Clo Spaleniec

This fascinating article goes deep into designing with gender inclusivity in mind. The author details her 5-step plan for designing inclusive fields.

Mindful UX is also about preventing abuse. This is a great article for designing products against misuse cases. Misuse cases are malicious acts against a system, such as spam, harassment, and stalking.

Clo Spaleniec

This is a longer read on the importance of picking bulletproof metrics as a UX team.

No Deep Dive on Mindful UX would be complete without tackling UX Research. The Nielsen Norman Group put together a thorough list of 36 questions to assess how ethical your user research is.a

That's a wrap! I hope you enjoyed learning about Mindful UX, whether you are a UX professional or not. As you discovered from my first article, Mindful UX principles are interesting to apply to your life even beyond the digital world.

If you want to learn more, I would advise to search for material on "Mindful UX" and "Calm Technology". Usually, UX Collective and Nielsen Norman Group have detailed reads and videos on UX, for readers of any level.
